In an official statement released on Friday, the US Treasury Department announced it was imposing a ban on all imports of Russian salmon, cod, pollock, and crab, as well as food products which were produced through their processing.
The ban on Russian seafood imports is the latest measure taken as part of a broader campaign by the United States and its allies to strengthen the economic punishment levied against Moscow over the war in Ukraine.
On Friday President Joe Biden also signed an executive order which would target any seafood caught by Russia which was processed in a third-party country, to include China, which is a major importer of Russian seafood products.
The ban will apply to fish and crab which are caught in waters which lie in the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation, or by ships sailing under a Russian flag outside of Russian jurisdiction, regardless of whether the seafood has later been reprocessed and substantially transformed outside of Russia.
The statement by the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said, “As a result, the importation and entry into the United States, including importation for admission into a foreign trade zone located in the United States, of such salmon, cod, pollock, or crab is prohibited.”
Previous US sanctions regarding seafood from Russia which were released in March of 2022 banned seafood which was exported directly to the United States, however it allowed those products to flow into America if they were first processed in another country.
