On Friday, the New York Times reported that Apple has begun negotiating in recent weeks with various news and publishing organizations in search of a deal which will allow the company permission to use the material of the various parties to develop its generative AI systems.
According to the report, people familiar with the discussions said the tech giant has offered the various parties it has approached multiyear deals which would be worth $50 million at a minimum, in return for licensing the archives of news articles.
Reportedly among the organizations contacted by Apple have been Condé Nast, which publishes Vogue and the New Yorker; NBC News; and IAC, which owns People, the Daily Beast and Better Homes and Gardens
According to the report, at least some of the parties contacted were lukewarm on the report.
Apple did not immediately respond to media requests for a comment on the report.
Most big tech companies have been investing heavily to integrate generative AI programs into their own products, however Apple has focused on using AI to improve basic functions in its new products.
In October, Apple introduced new MacBook Pro and iMac computers, as well as three new chips which would power them. The company emphasized the new computers could be used by artificial intelligence researchers, whose work is often limited by the amount of data the computer can hold in its memory.
