Russian Technology giant Yandex has announced it will be doubling its fleet of delivery robots in 2024 to 260 units, and it will begin renting their services to other firms.
Known as the Yandex.Rover, the baby-carriage sized robots can autonomously travel along sidewalks at a walking pace. Given a destination, the robot can plan its route, pause for any pedestrians or animals it encounters, and avoid obstacles. Because it uses lidar (light detection and ranging), it even functions in the dark.
The company announced that it is currently discussing the renting of its robot fleet with supermarket chains, coffee shops, and fast-food restaurants. Yandex also noted it has high hopes of partnering with hotels and shops, as well as residential blocks, creative clusters, and university campuses. The company notes it will offer all potential customers technical support and a warranty on the product.
The statement released by the company said, “About 15 delivery robots are enough to deliver food and groceries in a residential area with a population of 5,000 people.”
First debuting in 2019, the carriage-like robots have expanded their operation to Moscow, the Innopolis campus town in Russia’s Tatarstan Republic, Rosa Khutor and Krasnaya Polyana resorts in Sochi, as well as the city of Murino in Leningrad Region.
The current iteration of the robot is a third-generation rover, which was released in November of 2021. The latest batch of third generation robots released was a group of 50, which the company says have delivered 87% of their orders on time, and within 8-12 minutes.
