On Friday, the Mexican unit of Walmart said that it will be brought before a government anti-trust panel for, “alleged relative monopolistic practices”
In a statement, Walmart de Mexico said that the nation’s anti-trust regulator, Cofece, has said that following a three-year investigation, it will be opening a “quasi-jurisdictional process” looking at anti-trust practices by the company.
Known colloquially as Walmex, the retailer has said that it will be given 45 days in which to provide arguments and evidence in its defense. It noted it was initially told it was under investigation in 2020.
In a statement, the company said, “Walmex is confident that it has always acted in accordance with applicable law to ensure the best prices, quality and assortment to its clients.”
Cofece refused to comment on any pending enforcement activity.
Previously, the regulator has emphasized the need for smaller companies to be able to operate in the Mexican retail market alongside larger companies.
With 2890 locations in Mexico, Walmex is among the largest retail chains in the nation.
