On Thursday, Bloomberg News reported that a US cybersecurity advisory panel would be investigating the recent breach of US government department email systems by what were believed to be Chinese hackers. The investigation will examine the risks of utilizing cloud computing, as well as the role which Microsoft Corp’s security failures played in the breach.

The Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB) will examine the security risks surrounding cloud computing infrastructure, to include identity and authentication management, as well as a comprehensive review of all relevant cloud service providers, according to the report, which cites people familiar with the matter.

In July, Oregon Senator Ron Wyden requested the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Justice Department “take action” against Microsoft due to its role in allowing the attack.

Microsoft has been blamed for an incident where hackers, reportedly working on Beijing’s behalf, gained access to one of Microsoft’s cryptographic keys, and then exploited a coding flaw which granted them sweeping access to the company’s entire cloud email platform.

The access even allowed the hackers to spy on the communications of U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and senior State Department diplomats.

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee said it would open an investigation into the recent breaches of the Commerce and State Department email systems, as well as China’s suspected involvement.

Neither CISA nor Microsoft would comment on the matter.
