Russian energy giant Gazprom announced that on Monday it set a new record for daily gas deliveries to China through the Power of Siberia gas-pipeline.
The gas was supplied under a long-term contract between Gazprom and the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). The Power of Siberia pipeline was one part of a 30-year contract worth $400 billion which was signed by Gazprom and CNPC, in 2014.
On its Telegram channel, the company announced, “On July 31, the supply of Russian gas through the Power of Siberia pipeline once again exceeded the daily contractual obligations. Gazprom delivered all requested volumes and set a new historical record of daily gas supplies to China.”
The Power of Siberia pipeline which is one section of the so-called Eastern Route, presently supplies most of the Russian gas delivered to China. It became the first pipeline supplying gas to China from Russia when it was partially launched in December of 2019.
The pipeline transported 15.5 billion cubic meters of gas to China last year. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak noted recently that, as Moscow looks to increase energy cooperation with China, it is expected 22 billion cubic meters of gas will be delivered to China through the pipeline in 2023.
