Aided by an easing of semiconductor supply constraints, and much stronger Japanese demand, Japanese automaker Toyota Motor reported Friday that sales over the first half of 2023 were up 5.1% over the previous year.
Over the six months through June, the automaker sold 4.9 million vehicles globally, including its luxury Lexis brand, while over the same period one year prior, it had sold roughly 4.7 million vehicles.
The automaker’s Japanese sales were up 33.2% to 878,215 units, compared to one year prior, as US sales fell 0.7% to just above 1 million units. Asian sales dropped 0.5% to roughly 1.5 million units.
Global sales for the month of June were up 10% to 898,947 vehicles, as key markets such as the United States and Europe experienced growing demand for electric vehicles, such as hybrids.
Chinese sales declined in June, for the first time in three months, dropping 12.8% year over year to 174,548 units. Sales in China from January to June were down 2.8%.
Hybrid vehicle sales globally increased 37.6% year over year to 292,131 vehicles, making up just below a third of total global vehicle sales last month.
On the electric vehicle front, Toyota sold 10,191 battery-electric vehicles worldwide, including the luxury Lexus brand, with Chinese sales accounting for roughly 5,000 of those sales. In total, Toyota sold about 46,171 battery powered vehicles over the first half of 2023.
