On Monday, the Biden administration added 43 companies to an export control list. Among the additions was Frontier Services Group Ltd, a security and aviation company which was previously run by Erik Prince, former Navy SEAL and founder of security firm Blackwater. The restrictions apply to its operations training Chinese military pilots and any other activities which might threaten US national security.
Authorities in Britain have begun investigating the Test Flying Academy of South Africa, in relation to its training of Chinese military pilots using British ex-military pilots, and it was also added to the list by the United States.
Companies on the list are restricted in acquiring US exports, and other activities which might aid China’s military modernization or which are otherwise contrary to US interests.
The new additions have a large number of aviation companies and flying academies among them, including Frontier Services Group LTD as well as other entities with sites in China, Kenya, Laos and the United Arab Emirates; TFASA subsidiaries in China, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom; and AVIC entities in China and South Africa.
According to a rule posted to the Federal Register, the aviation related companies were being cited for their services providing training to the Chinese military’s pilots using Western and NATO sources.
Other entities were included for facilitating human rights abuses in China, including repression of the Uighur Muslims and members of other minority groups in Xinjiang in the west of China.
