New data from market research company JATO Dynamics released Friday revealed the Tesla Model Y electric crossover sedan has become the best selling car in the world in the first quarter of 2023.
In becoming the first all-electric automobile to take the top ranking globally, the Model Y had to surpass the Toyota RAV4 and the Corolla.
In the first three months of the year, the Model Y saw 267,200 units sold globally, while the Corolla sold 256,400 units, and the RAV4 sold 214,700 over the same period. It marked a 69% increase year over year for the Model Y.
The Tesla beat out its competitors, even as the Tesla Model Y’s pricing starts at $47,490, compared to the Corolla’s starting price of $21,550, and the RAV4’s starting price of $27,575.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk had said even before the Model Y was first introduced that he was confident in its success, estimating in 2016 the vehicle would end up selling “in the 500k to 1 million unit per year level.”
Experts note the results are a milestone for Tesla, which has been able to dominate the sluggish electric vehicle market despite a raft of new-coming competitors due to efficiencies of scale in production that are facilitated by its dominant position.
In the first quarter of 2023, Tesla has reported delivering over 400,000 Model Y and Model 3 vehicles to customers.
Sales have been helped by frequent discounts the company has offered on its lineup of electric vehicles over the last few years, as well as government tax breaks offered for the purchase of EVs which meet certain criteria. Experts have noted these price reductions have likely contributed to the overall sales numbers of the vehicles.
