On Monday, Volvo Group said Swiss building solutions provider Holcim has signed an order for 1,000 electric trucks, for delivery over the next seven years, marking the largest order ever for electric trucks from Volvo.
The company specified that all the vehicles in the Holcim order would be battery electric trucks (BEVs).
AB Volvo, which also markets vehicles under the brand names Mack, Renault and UD Trucks, said, “The deal is the largest commercial order to date for Volvo electric trucks.”
The initial 130 trucks will consist of the heavy electric Volvo FH and FM models, and delivery will be made during the fourth quarter of 2023 and throughout 2024. There was no further data provided on the order, including monetary amounts.
In an email, Volvo said that the pace of delivery for the remainder of the order would be determined in conjunction with Holcim.
The first trucks will be delivered to a number of markets, to include France, Germany, Switzerland, and Britain, as Holcim spreads the deployment of all 1,000 trucks around its operations throughout Europe.
In the past quarters, Volvo, which is aiming to have half of its truck sales be electric vehicles by 2030, has seen a surge in electric truck orders, as companies throughout Europe strive to meet zero-emissions targets.
As demand is expected to increase, Volvo Trucks has begun to ramp up its production at three plants in the United States, France, and Sweden, while preparing to begin production in the third quarter of 2023 at a new factory in Belgium.
In addition to the battery electric trucks, Volvo is developing hydrogen fuel cell powered trucks, which it expects will be made available for sale beginning sometime after 2025.
