In a bid to make its search engine more “visual, snackable, personal, and human,” and focus it more toward a younger demographic, Google has announced it will be reconfiguring its search engine’s functions to make more use of video clips and Artificial Intelligence chat capabilities, according to a Wall Street Journal report released Saturday.

The move comes as the industry appears poised at the edge of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) revolution with such AI applications as ChatGPT rapidly gaining in popularity, and search engines looking to replace their standard listing of many links as results, with single customized responses to queries generated by an AI which has already digested all of the results.

According to the report, the tech titan will move its service away from “10 blue links,” which is how Google has traditionally served its search results, transitioning toward the incorporation of a more human voice.

The Wall Street Journal goes on to report that at its annual I/O developer conference in the upcoming week, Google will reportedly reveal new features which will include the ability to engage in actual conversations with an artificial intelligence program using voice recognition and generation capabilities, in a feature which the search giant has codenamed “Magi.” It promises to be a departure from merely typing in a singe search query and receiving a list of links.

It comes as the public sphere is awash in revelations about the new “generative AIs.” Companies have been rushing to develop and deploy their own AI applications in the wake of the release of Chat GPT, and observers have been speculating on how the new technology will revolutionize, and upend business and society.

Google has not responded to requests for comment on the new developments.
