On Monday, Reuters reported that a company spokesperson for French energy giant Total said that all production had been halted at one of the nation’s largest refineries. The news came amid continuing protests ongoing in the nation over the government’s plan to raise the age of retirement.

The shutdown at the Gonfreville refinery came after replacement staff were requisitioned to serve at the site to avoid shortages in fuel supplies, including at Paris airports. The unions have engaged in additional protests over the requisitions of replacement staff at the 240,000 barrel per day (bpd) refinery.

Responsible for supplying fuel to the entire Ile-de-France region, Gonfreville supplies fuels to the capital’s main airports. Refinery workers who managed to hold a blockade on the refinery were dispersed Friday temporarily, which allowed fuel shipments to resume. However since then the workers have resumed their picket.

Protests at French refineries have begun to impact retail supply, with some fuel stations short of gas and diesel. It has also impacted liquified natural gas terminals, electricity supply, and nuclear reactor maintenance.

According to a statement by Energy Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher last week, roughly 15% of French gas stations were seeing disruptions to supplies.

The nation has been rocked by violent protests since last week. Over a million people have turned out to protest in a nationwide uprising against a government law raising the retirement age from 62 to 64, first proposed by President Emmanuel Macron.

Macron used special executive privilege to bypass a vote in Parliament on the measure, insisting it was necessary because of the impending bankruptcy of the national pension system.

Even as trade unions, opposition parties, and millions of citizens have denounced the measure, Macron has refused to consider any opposition to the measure.
