Meta, parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced it will restore the official Facebook and Instagram accounts of former President Donald J. Trump. Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, said the suspension of the accounts will be lifted in the coming weeks.
Trump’s accounts were suspended in the aftermath of the Jan 6th riots at the United States Capitol, when protestors opposed to the 2020 election stormed the building in an attempt to disrupt the certification of the election which was going on inside.
Clegg noted Trump will face stringent restrictions on his account should he again violate Meta’s terms of service.
He said, “In light of his violations, he now also faces heightened penalties for repeat offenses – penalties which will apply to other public figures whose accounts are reinstated from suspensions related to civil unrest under our updated protocol.”
He went on, “In the event that Mr. Trump posts further violating content, the content will be removed and he will be suspended for between one month and two years, depending on the severity of the violation.”
Trump could face sanctions should he share content created by others which delegitimizes the electoral process, or which promotes banned material such as Q-anon.
Trump’s reinstatement is occurring 2 years after the initial suspension, and just as Twitter has reinstated his account on that platform. Trump has yet to post any content on Twitter, preferring so far to remain exclusively on his own platform, Truth Social.
The reinstatements come just as Trump is beginning to prepare for another White House run in 2024.
