Shortly after the market opened on Tuesday, trading was briefly halted for more than 200 stocks on the New York Stock Exchange due to an apparent technical issue. In addition, many early trades which appeared abnormal will be canceled.
According to the NYSE’s website, Morgan Stanley, Verizon, AT&T, Nike and McDonald’s are just some of the major names affected. Volatility halts were likely triggered when many stocks were shown to have abnormally large moves.
The impacted companies had mostly resumed trading before 9:45 a.m. ET. By 9:50 the NUSE was reporting all of its systems were again fully operational.
On Tuesday, the NYSE released a statement saying that due to a system issue, the exchange had not conducted opening auctions for some of its listed securities.
The exchange went on to say it would declare some early trades of impacted stocks voided because of the error. The exchange website contains the full list of affected stocks.
Intercontinental Exchange owns the NYSE. Its shares were down 2.2% on Tuesday.
Although the NYSE maintains automatic halts for stocks which move too dramatically up or down, typically few if any stocks will see a halt enacted on a typical trading day.
The technical issue did appear to affect the Nasdaq exchange.
