On Tuesday, Bloomberg News reported that as part of an initiative to begin bringing the manufacture of more components in-house, Apple Inc is planning to begin using its own custom displays in its mobile devices. The report cited people with knowledge of the matter.
By the end of next year, the company expects it will have made the first step by swapping out the displays on its highest-end Apple watches. According to the report, the tech giant will eventually bring these displays to its other devices, including its signature iPhone.
The initiative by the Cupertino-based trendsetting tech company is designed to reduce the company’s reliance on other partners, such as Samsung Electronics, and LG Corp.
Apple did not respond to requests for comment on the matter, nor did two present suppliers of Apple, Samsung Electronics, and LG Display.
The report noted the in-house screens would upgrade the current OLED standard used, to a new technology called microLED.
On Monday Bloomberg had reported that Apple was planning to replace the Broadcom Inc chips it presently uses in its devices with an in-house design by 2025.
The high tech device maker has been trying to gradually reduce its reliance on other chipmakers, having replaced the chips from Intel Corp it previously used in its older Mac computers to its own line of chips in its more recent models.
