IraqiNews is reporting that an arrest warrant has been issued by the Iraqi Supreme Court for former President Donald J. Trump, for the assassination of Iran’s Quds Force commander, Qasem Soleimani, on Iraqi soil.
On Thursday the warrant was issued for both the killing of Soleimani and the killing of another Iraqi militia leader, the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) chief of staff in Iraq. Both men were killed in drone strikes near the Baghdad airport in January of 2020.
The assassinations triggered retaliatory strikes against the Aia Al-Assad U.S. base in Iraq.
The arrest warrant is for the crime of premeditated murder. Although it is acknowledged the warrant is largely symbolic, the punishment, if convicted, would be the death penalty.
Investigations into the killings are ongoing, according to the Associated Press.
Supreme Judicial Council head Faiq Zaidban demanded Baghdad hold Trump “accountable for this heinous crime,” according to IraqiNews.
Iran’s influence over Iraq has grown exponentially since the toppling of Sunni leader Saddam Hussein, and the subsequent drawdown of the US presence in the second-largest oil-producer in OPEC. This has left the Iraqi government caught between the influence of Iran, and the influence of the geopolitically powerful United States.
Iraq’s parliament ended a long running stalemate in October, by naming a new pro-Iranian prime minister. Pro-Iranian parties now dominate the government after Shi’ite leader Moqtada al Sadr was sidelined, following his paralyzing of the government with anti-Iranian protests.
The chief of staff of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Iraq killed by the US in a Trump-ordered military operation led an umbrella group which facilitated cooperation between various pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, which were operated as an element of the Iraqi armed forces.
