When Cadillac announced it was going to build the $300,000 Celestiq luxury electric car, the automotive world was shocked. However recent sales numbers show the move was a brilliant one for the automaker.
Set to enter production later in 2023, the four-door lift-back will feature customized luxury appointments tailored to each unique buyer’s specifications, making each car entirely unique.
Each vehicle is set to be handcrafted at General Motors’ Warren Technical Center in Michigan in a special facility which will produce two cars per day. However judging by pre-orders, it is looking like that will be nowhere near a large enough production rate.
Tony Roma, the vehicle’s chief engineer, said in an interview that the list of “hand raisers” who have indicated they will be ordering one has already swelled.
Roma noted that of those who have indicated interest, there are “many many more than we’re going to be able to build in the first year or 18 months.” That would point to the car being sold out into 2025, just off its initial interest.
Roma added, “It’s a fantastic problem to have, to have so much interest.”
The process of purchasing a Celestiq will not be so easy as simply paying for it. First a prospective buyer will have to apply for a slot to be considered, and then Cadillac will examine their application based on a range of criteria, ranging from brand loyalty to how such a buyer will represent Cadillac.
If approved, the customer will be assigned a concierge, with whom they will work on the design details of their specific car. As one example, musician Lenny Kravitz, who is a Cadillac brand ambassador, has chosen to have a guitar strap integrated into his unique Celestiq.
All vehicles will feature the same mechanicals, however, which include a 600 hp all-wheel-drive powertrain, four-wheel steering and Cadillac’s new Ultra Cruise electronic driver aid, which is projected to be able to handle 95% of all driving once its software is fully developed.
