In Lugano Switzerland, fast food icon McDonalds has announced it will now accept bitcoin as a form of payment in its restaurants.
On Tuesday, Bitcoin Magazine posted a one-minute video to Twitter, showing an order being placed at a digital kiosk in a McDonalds, and paid for with a mobile app. On the credit card machine, a logo for cryptocurrency Tether, as well as a Bitcoin symbol could be seen displayed.
The video comes after the mayor of Lugano announced that Bitcoin and Tether were now “de facto legal tender” in the city. Since March, residents of Lugano have been allowed to pay their taxes using the cryptocurrencies. It is now expected that under the mayor’s leadership, soon citizens will be able to pay parking tickets, public services and tuition fees for students all in crypto. Reportedly there are also more than 200 shops and businesses now preparing to be able to accept payments in crypto.
The first country in the world to make Bitcoin legal currency in the nation was El Salvador. It was followed shortly thereafter by the Central African Republic in May.
McDonalds has also announced it will enter the Metaverse. In preparation the company has filed to register 10 different trademarks for use in the virtual world, where it plans, “a virtual restaurant featuring actual and virtual goods,” and “operating a virtual restaurant featuring home delivery.”
