T-Mobile customers who were subscribed in August of 2021 are set to get some money back from the carrier. T-Mobile has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit over a data-breach which exposed the personal information of 76.6 million “current, former and prospective customers.”

In the data breach, T-Mobile has said the hacker used specialized tools and knowledge of the company’s internal infrastructure to access its testing environment, where they stole customer data and then sold it on hacker forums.

The type of information stolen was varied from customer to customer, but could have included the name, birthdate, and social security number of each individual. T-Mobile directly contacted affected customers after the hack was discovered, and offered them two free years of McAfee’s ID Theft Protection Service.

Now they will also get an award from the settlement, however according to reports, it will likely only be a few dollars. Although the settlement was for $350 million, it will be divided among tens of millions of customers. In addition it has been reported the company will also spend $150 million on data security technologies throughout this year and the next.

The settlement will still have to be approved by the court. However once approved, it will, “resolve substantially all of the claims brought by the company’s current, former and prospective customers who were impacted by the 2021 cyberattack.”
