Elon Musk’s Boring Company Has received approval from the City of Las Vegas to build the 34 mile underground “Vegas Loop” tunnel system linking parts of the city. The Loop began as a 29 mile tunnel network with 51 stations, however plans have since been expanded to 34 miles with 55 stations, including stations that will deliver users to Harry Reid International Airport and the Allegiant Stadium.

Boring Co. President Steve Davis has estimated tunneling could begin is 2023 in downtown Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Davis said, “This is step two and there are eight steps for us to be opening. There’s a long way to go and a lot of work to do. But if I were to guess on the spot I would guess we’d have machines in (the ground) next calendar year.”

According to reports, the downtown stations will include the Strat, Fremont Street Experience, the Slotzilla attraction, the Garage Mahal at the Circa Resort and the Plaza Hotel. The Boring company has said it will be able to add other stations in the future, at a cost of $1.5 to $20 million to build.

Davis said it will cost about $12 to travel from Fremont Street Experience downtown to Reid International, and it would take about eight or nine minutes.

The project still requires a number of permits and design approvals however. At present only about 1.7 miles of the Vegas Loop are operational under the Las Vegas Convention Center. However, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority CEO Steve Hill says he expects more portions will become operational in 2023.
