Ford issued a stop-sale for its Ford Mach-E, ordering dealers to halt all sales due to a safety defect.
Ford issued the safety notice on Monday, advising dealers that 2021 and 2022 Mach-Es manufactured between May 27, 2020 and May 24, 2022 at the factory in Cuautitlan, Mexico have a defect which could cause the vehicles to stop all acceleration and become immobile.
Ford advised that of 100,000 Mach-E’s produced during that time frame, about 49,000 will be part of the recall.
In the affected vehicles, the vehicle’s high voltage main battery connectors can overheat. Since that is an electrically controlled switch for a power circuit, that can cause a malfunction where the vehicle will not start, or lose acceleration while moving, rendering the vehicles immobile.
The Mach-E has experienced a number of recalls since its inception. according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recalls have ranged from poorly affixed glass panel roofs, to loose subframe bolts, to unintended acceleration issues in a handful of vehicles.
Ford spokesman Said Deep said Ford has submitted the matter to NHTSA seeking a recall, and Ford expects to have a solution by the third quarter. After dealers are advised on repair instructions, owners will be notified of updates by mail.
Deep said the repair will likely include a software repair of the “Secondary On-Board Diagnostic Control Module and Battery Energy Control Module,” which will be done remotely, or over the air. Alternately it can be done at the dealer by a technician.
