Connecticut is set to attach an additional nine cent per gallon tax on sales of diesel fuel, raising the price even further above record setting highs. Connecticut’s Department of Revenue Services announced the forthcoming tax this week.

In about two weeks, on July 1, the tax on diesel fuel will rise to 49.2 cents per gallon, from the current 40.1 cents.

Commissioner of Revenue Services Mark Boughton said, “In accordance with this statutory obligation, I am hereby notifying you that, effective July 1, 2022, the tax rate on diesel fuel will be 49.2 cents per gallon. You have to remember that Connecticut does not have a highway use tax or highway use fee for in-state trucking companies or those small delivery companies nor do we have tolls.”

Diesel fuel set a record high on Wednesday, rising $2.564 higher than it was last year, at $5.780 per gallon. Regular gas is averaging 5.014 per gallon nationally. In Connecticut the average price for a regular gallon of gas is $4.983, but diesel is already averaging $6.170 per gallon, before the tax hike.

Meanwhile other states are employing policies designed to lift the burden of high prices off their citizens. Florida actually implemented a month-long gas-tax holiday, dropping the price for customers about 25 cents per gallon.

At the time, Governor Ron DeSantis noted, “We’re doing $200 million in gas tax holiday, so that will reduce the fuel tax on October 1st by about 25 cents a gallon.”
