Facebook is facing a slew of lawsuits in various states alleging its technology is detrimental to the health of young people.
So far the law firm Beasley Allen has launched eight lawsuits alleging that both Facebook and Instagram are hurting the health of young people. It further alleges that the platforms were designed to be as psychologically addictive as possible to generate profits, at the expense of the well-being of users.
One attorney said, “The defendants knew that their products and related services were dangerous to young and impressionable children and teens, yet they completely disregarded their own information. They implemented sophisticated algorithms designed to encourage frequent access to the platforms and prolonged exposure to harmful content.”
The lawyers allege they have company documents showing the company was aware its platform was “toxic” to teenaged girls, and it has testimony by a whistleblower who will highlight the platform’s effect on young users.
Beasley Allen attorney Andy Birchfield said, “The defendants knew that their products and related services were dangerous to young and impressionable children and teens, yet they completely disregarded their own information. They implemented sophisticated algorithms designed to encourage frequent access to the platforms and prolonged exposure to harmful content.”
He went on to say, it was an active decision by the company to, “aggressively addict adolescents in the name of corporate profits.” The lawsuit describes the various mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, self-harm, and even attempted suicide which plaintiffs are suffering from.
This lawsuit comes on the heels of another filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California last week by a family which blamed the platform for their daughter’s self-harm, eating disorder, and suicidal thoughts.
